Swan and Dolphin Food & Wine Classic Returns in Fall (and in Full)

SwanSpring concourse

The Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Food & Wine Classic returns in November a little more whole than it’s been the past couple of years.

The event, which takes place along the waterways and on the concourses and the causeway that connects the two resorts, will celebrate its 13th addition November 11 and 12 from 5:30 to 9 p.m. each day. It showcases the many celebrated restaurants that call the hotels home, including Shula’s Steak House, Todd English’s bluezoo, Il Mulino, Kimonos, and the new (and very good) Amare, among others. In addition, there will be wine, cocktail and beer stations. In fact, the beer garden that has been a favorite in the past will be returning this year.

Also back are the seminars and learning experiences that were put on hold for the past couple of events. You can learn about wine blending, craft cocktailing, making pasta, and other classes.

White Castle

WhiteCastle ext

I finally broke down and visited the new White Castle that opened a few months ago in the Flamingos Crossing area near Walt Disney World. I intentionally waited until the initial hoopla waned a bit. When it first opened there were rumors of eight hour waits to get food. I will do a lot of things for you, Gentle Diner, but waiting that long for a miniature burger is not among them. Heck, I wouldn’t even wait eight hours to get into Victoria & Albert’s (which, by the way, recently reopened; I’ll have that review next week).

And besides, it isn’t like White Castle isn’t a known commodity. It’s popular for its tiny, square burgers that initially had a reputation of being so small and greasy that they just slid down one’s gullet, bringing the term slider into our lexicon.

Magical Dining Recommendation: Tap Room at Dubsdread

taproom prime rib

It doesn’t take a lot to convince people to go to the Tap Room at Dubsdread. It’s one of the area’s most popular and most celebrated restaurants, known for its casual atmosphere that belies the high quality of its food.

But of course Visit Orlando’s Magical Dining offers an extra reason to visit the College Park mainstay, especially because the prime rib, which is usually offered only on weekends, is available daily during the promotion.

Newsy Nuggets: Goff’s, Dislodge, Barbecue, Chicken Sandwiches

Goff's

Orlando Police have made an arrest in the suspected arson of Goff’s Drive-in, the landmark Parramore ice cream stand that opened in 1948. A fire shut the business down in May. OPD now say that 58-year-old Orlando resident Alfred Kirkland deliberately set the business ablaze. No one was present at the time of the early morning fire and there were no injuries. The police report says that Kirkland can be seen in a surveillance video pouring a flammable liquid on plywood and setting it ablaze. Goff’s owner, Todd Peacock, had planned to reopen the ice cream stand in July but has come up against Orlando’s convoluted permitting and inspection process. Goff’s wasn’t unfamiliar with violence. In 1951 it was threatened by members of the Ku Klux Klan for allowing Blacks and whites to order ice cream from the same counter.
