Financier Bistro & Bar

Financier interior

Is it Financier or Financier? That is, should we pronounce the name of Financier Bistro & Bar in Winter Park fih-nan-see-AY or fih-nan-SEER? The former is the French word for a classic almond cake that is shaped sort of like a gold bar. The latter is, um, a French word with an American pronunciation that means someone who manages money (and may be of various shapes).

Actually, it can be either or both, according to the restaurant’s website. The name was chosen as a double entendre (doo-bluh ahn-TAHN-druh) for a patisserie that opened in 2002 in Manhattan’s Financial District (usual pronunciation) and is now permanently closed.

1921 Mount Dora

1921MD ext

The Mount Dora Art Festival seemed like a good time to take a road trip and check out how 1920 Mount Dora is doing.

I hadn’t visited the restaurant since it was known as 1921 by Norman Van Aken. Van Aken, the popular award-winning chef based in South Florida, was instrumental in developing and opening the restaurant in 2016. He ended his involvement in 2018 and the restaurant was renamed 1921 Mount Dora.

In the ensuing years, I missed a couple of chefs who took up residency there, figuratively more than literally, including Josh Oakley, who cooked there between his Smiling Bison days and his current position as executive chef at The Monroe in downtown Orlando’s Creative Village.

Now in the executive chef chair at 1921 is Chris Edwards, who previously held that position at King + Duke in Atlanta.

Duck Tapa

Back in November, Joseph McFadden, executive chef at Euphoria Fish House at Margaritaville Resort Orlando, travelled to Spain to represent the United States at the World Tapas Competition hosted by the city of Valladolid. NBC did not cover the event.

Other countries participating were: Mexico, Ecuador, Spain, Ukraine, Portugal, Canada, Japan, Panama, France, Chile, Denmark, Ireland, Argentina, United Arab Emirates, and India. The winner, chosen by members of the World Association of Chefs Societies, which actually chooses to go by the acronym WACS, was Pascal Etcheverria, of Restaurant Le Carré in the lovely town of Bayonne, France. Etcheverria’s tapa was Mejilla de res, zanahorias, paté de pato y maracuyá (beef tips, carrots, duck paté and passion fruit).

F&D Woodfired Kitchen moving its Curry Ford Road location

FandD new construction

It was announced about a year ago that the block that holds F&D Woodfired Italian Kitchen in the Hourglass District (which is inside the Curry Ford West District) would be developed for the construction of a mixed-use complex. That meant that F&D’s free-standing building – which has been home to myriad restaurants for decades, including International Cafe and other Latin American eateries – would have to be demolished and the restaurant relocated.

That relocation is coming,

Blackened Double Lamb Chops with Garlic and Potato Gratin from Russell’s On Lake Ivanhoe

Russells double lamb chop

Russell’s on Lake Ivanhoe was recently voted 2021 Best New Restaurant in our Foodster Awards for Independent Restaurants. Much of the restaurant’s popularity is due to chef/partner Emmanuel Clement’s French-influenced menu. In the February issue of the Community Paper, he shares his recipe for Blackened Double Lamb Chops with Garlic and Potato Gratin for my monthly Local Flavor column.

You’ll notice in the photo that Clement frenches the bones of the chops. That is, he scrapes off the gristle on the “handle” of the chop. It makes for a prettier presentation but is totally unnecessary.

The recipe calls for eight double chops — ask your grocer’s butcher for them — but you could easily make it with four or even two. (Make all the potatoes, though, because you’re going to want extras.) Click here to see the recipe.
