The South Beach Wine and Food Festival, or SOBEWFF, took place last week in Miami and over four days hundreds of chefs, celebrities and celebrity chefs participated in dozens of events.
There was a new event this year, a walkabout food and wine tasting called Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives LIVE, based on the Food Network program of the same name (without the LIVE). As with the television, or nonLIVE, version, this one was hosted by Guy Fieri, who selected 30 participants who had been featured on DDD.
And right there on the sand Thursday night representing Central Florida were George Markward of the Pastrami Project and Trina Gregory-Propst of Se7en Bites.
And even more impressive: Se7en Bites’ bite was was voted the best of the evening by attendees. That’s Gregory-Propst pictured at top being presented a very large check from Fieri.
“I was thrilled,” Gregory-Propst said Monday in a phone call. “There was some really great food there, too.”
Gregory-Propst served two dishes at the event, a vanilla bourbon bacon Nighttime SkyPie that was featured on the television program and a dish called the Minnie Pearl – chicken and waffles with buttermilk fried chicken on a Belgian pearl waffle topped with vanilla butter syrup. It was the Minnie Pearl that took the top prize. Gregory-Propst said she was especially proud that a fried chicken dish – one of several served at the event – was the winning bite. (The Minnie Pearl description on the diner’s website says it features its “almost famous” fried chciken, so that should probably be updated.)
The DDD event took place under a large tent right on the beach. “It was really different cooking in sand,” she said.
