Newsy Nuggets: Southern Box, A La Cart, Persimmon Hollow, Lamp Shades and MedTaste

Written By Scott Joseph On May 29, 2024

Great Southern Box exterior

Great Southern Box Company food hall opened over the Memorial Day weekend in College Park’s nascent Packing District. It is, appropriately enough, a big, boxy building with the food hall in the center and two large spaces on either end. One will be a microbrewery and the other will be an event space capable of handling large crowds.

The food hall is reminiscent of an upscale mall’s food court – Mall at Millenia came to mind when I visited for a preview last week – with the various vendors ringing the space. But unlike a mall, GBSC features a central bar and rather comfy-looking seating, including spacious booths.

Opening vendors include Kayos Jamaican Grill, Dancing Yeti Nepalese & Indian Kitchen, Braza Brazilian Steakhouse and Antica Wood Fired Pizzeria among others. New York based HospitalityHQ is the developer. Click through the gallery below for a look at the place.

And here’s another nice feature: Great Southern Box Company has its own dedicated – and free – parking garage.

A La Cart SoDo, a sort of hall-less food hall, has opened its second circle-the-food-wagons on East Michigan Street.

Persimmon Hollow Brewing Co., which took over the former Panera Bread space across from Lake Eola, is closing that location as of Thursday, May 30. It will continue to operate out of its DeLand location.

Lamp & Shade Craft Kitchen and Cocktails, a new bar and lounge that moved into a building on Mills Avenue that used to house a shop that sold, um, lamps and shades, has opened. I like the new business’s hashtag: #throwsomeshade.

And over on Semoran Boulevard, Cappadocia Turkish Cuisine is now MedTaste. Same staff, same menu, I’m told, but new owners.
