Newsy Nuggets: Food fair, Little Fin, Morimoto promotion, falling doughnut prices and more

  • The next is a series of sorta monthly events celebrating local foods is Saturday, Aug. 13, from noon to 7 p.m. at Ivanhoe Park Brewing Company. The 407 Food Fair will feature more than 20 independently owned local food purveyors selling their wares, including Pass Kitchen, Royal T Tapas and the eagerly anticipated Red Panda Noodles from the former Orlando Meats guys. The 407 Food Fair is usually the second Saturday of each month but there are two events scheduled for November.
  • The owners of Big Fin Seafood (formerly known as Big Fin Seafood Kitchen) will soon open a restaurant in the Villages called Little Fin. It will be similar to Big Fin in concept but, you know, smaller.

  • Yuhi Fujinaga of Morimoto Asia has been promoted to the position of culinary director for all of Patina Restaurant Group’s Orlando restaurants, which also includes Maria & Enzo’s, Enzo’s Hideaway and the Edison. Takeshi Ikeuchi, who had been executive sous chef at MA takes Fujinaga’s place as its executive chef. The restaurant’s namesake, Masaharu Morimoto, will be making appearances at his Disney Springs operation on Sunday and Monday.
  • Every Wednesday through Labor Day, which is the first Monday in September so let’s just say every Wednesday through the rest of the month, Krispy Kreme will be selling a dozen donuts for the same price as the national average for a gallon of gas. The way that gas prices are coming down, you should be able to pick up a dozen for a good price. Food sellers don’t usually like to associate their products with gas, so…
  • Speaking of food prices, the New York Times this week published a story that explains how rising expenses are affecting restaurant charges. The online article offers an interesting interactive version.
  • It’s becoming common to see events that feature cocktail pairings but usually it’s with food. An event from Creative City Project is doing a pairing of cocktails with creative storytelling and jazz. Anthology will be Aug. 19 through 21 with shows at 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. at the Renaissance Theatre Company, 415 E. Princeton St., Orlando. Tickets, available here, are $35 and include four three-ounce cocktails.
