Newsy Nuggets: 2 of the world’s 11 best steakhouses are in Orlando; dogs outdo health department; and not so sweet news from Holly

Knife & Spoon at the Ritz-Carlton Orlando

Knife & Spoon at the Ritz-Carlton and Capo at the Four Seasons Orlando are cited cited in a Robb Report article titled “The 11 Best Steakhouses in the World, According to Michelin.” Both restaurants recently received a Michelin star for the second year in a row. Also noted in the article were Cote in New York and Miami; Beefbar, Hong Kong; The Kitchen, Macau; and Kitashinchi Fukutatei, Osaka, among others.

Orlando is the only city in the article with two restaurants. Pretty impressive, wouldn’t you say, Mr. Beard?

Who let the dogs back in?

With apologies to the Baha Men, it was Judge Lynne Quimby-Pennock, that’s who (who who who who).

Quimby-Pennock on Thursday ruled in favor of two bars, Pups Pub Orlando and Pups Pub Tampa, that were cited by the Florida Department of Health last fall for allowing dogs inside the building. Both bars had been issued sanitation certificates, Tampa’s in December 2020 and Orlando’s in July 2022, after stipulating that food would not be served.

But shortly after, both businesses were cited for violations because dogs were in the premises during health inspections.

In her 29-page order, Quimby-Pennock ruled that DOH did not go through an appropriate process to adopt a rule that would keep dogs out of the bars. “The question here is simple — did DOH change its interpretation of the rule?” Quimby-Pennock’s order said. “In this case, the preponderance of the competent and substantial evidence adduced at the final hearing clearly shows that DOH, through its CHDs [county health departments], interpreted the rule for over four years to allow dogs in bars with certain restrictions in place. The evidence clearly established that in mid-2022, DOH changed its interpretation to prohibit dogs in bars.”(The Pup Pubs had installed gates to keep doggies out of the beverage preparation and service areas.)

The Orlando Pups Pub is at 317 N. Orange Ave. in a former Sir Speedy space.

Cake baker and cupcaker  Sweet by Holly has closed its Waterford Lakes shop after 15 years. A post of Facebook noted the closing is due to a 60 percent increase in rent.
