Beacon will rise again — sort of

Written By Scott Joseph On June 15, 2009

As reported earlier, the Beacon, the stylishly upscale lounge at the Sanctuary condominiums, has closed. But Mark Angelo, president and CEO of Beacon Hill Group, owners of Beacon and other hospitality operations, says he will reopen the space in early August. It will have a new name, and the interior will be modified to convey a more moderate atmosphere.

“We need to bring it down a notch,” said Angelo. “We’re going to redevelop the concept a little more casual.”

At about the same time, Beacon Hill Group will open another long-planned operation across the street at 101 S. Eola Drive. That will be a tequila bar and Mexican eatery to be called The Worm. (They still have 45 days to change their minds about that one.) Also planned at that address is Rivalz Sports Bar and Sports Network.

The business formerly known as the Beacon will continue to operate over the next few weeks for catered parties and private functions. Angelo said he was trying to keep the kitchen staff intact and find places for other staffers at some of his other operations. Beacon Hill Group owns Stardust Lounge in the space  downstairs from what used to be Lee’s Lakeside and Cigarz at CityWalk. The Beacon employed a staff of about 20, according to Angelo, and he plans to bring some of them back in the reopened entity (working title Pop) and in the new businesses across the street that together will have a staff of 60.
