A Call for Sous Chefs

Written By Scott Joseph On July 20, 2018

sous chef chef 1

Note: This is mostly for the restaurateurs and chefs out there, but some of you who are not in the business might be interested in attending the event. Details to come soon.

A few years ago I hosted an event that showcased the talents of the sous chefs who work in some of the area’s kitchens. It was a popular event and I’ve had many people ask if I have plans to repeat it.

I do.

But this time it’s going to be a bigger and higher profile event, part of the Florida Restaurant & Lodging Show at the Orange County Convention Center.

The theme of the event is “The Next Big Thing,” and participants will be challenged to create a dish for the show attendees to sample that they believe will be a new trend. It could be an ingredient, it could be a particular dish or it could be a presentation style — it’s all up to the sous chefs to decide. The dishes will be judge by a professional panel and by the show attendees. And to make it interesting, a monetary prize will be awarded to the winner.

Why sous chefs? Well, they, too, represent the next big thing, so let’s give them a chance to show us what they can do.

Nominations of sous chefs to participate are now being accepted. If you’d like to nominate your sous, send a note to me with the name of your restaurant and your sous chef along with some comments about why he or she should be accepted. There are only 10 spots available, so be specific with your praise.

The event will take place on Saturday, Sept. 8, and will be during the day (so evening service won’t be disrupted). Certain proteins and other ingredients will be made available to the participants, courtesy of Sysco.

More specific details will be given to those chosen to participate.

This is going to be a fun event, and I hope to showcase the area’s top talent. So send in your nomination right away.

We hope you find our reviews and news articles useful and entertaining. It has always been our goal to assist you in making informed decisions when spending your dining dollars. If we’ve helped you in any way, please consider making a contribution to help us continue our journalism. Thank you.
