A little while back, Greg Granda, who owns Shakers American Cafe with his wife, Terry, was doing some cleaning when he opened on old Domino sugar can and found the note above, a reminder, apparently, from the original owner of the diner’s opening day, Aug. 23, 1993. So that means Wednesday is the popular restaurant’s 30th anniversary. Be sure to stop by and congratulate them.
The Grandas are the fourth owners, purchasing the business in 2014. They were College Park residents and fans of Shakers, so when the opportunity came to take it over, they grabbed it.
The restaurant is named for the salt and pepper shakers that decorate the shelves around the restaurant, along with the occasional sugar tin. According to Granda, the original owner offered a free slice of pie to anyone who donated a set of shakers to the collection. There were many takers.
The Grandas have done a great job keeping the quality of Shakers’ food and service first rate. That’s how a restaurant gets to 30 years.
