Win a Pair of Tickets to Share Our Strength’s Taste of the Nation

Written By Scott Joseph On June 27, 2011

Did you see the repeat broadcast of the 60 Minutes report on homeless and hungry kids Sunday evening? It originally aired earlier this year and featured families in Central Florida who have been upended by the recession and the slow recovery. Besides families who have lost their homes and are now living in motels, with relatives and with neighbors, the most devastating part of the piece was when the children spoke of what it felt like to go to bed hungry. I can’t describe it nearly as vividly as the young man Scott Pelley interviewed on the CBS program. And you’ll understand why I refer to this child as a young man when you see it.

Here’s a link to the 60 Minutes segment.

After the rebroadcast, Pelley gave a brief update on some of the families featured in the story. He also noted that many viewers had come forward to help with donations. He did not say that the problem has gone away or that there is no need for further help.

There is tremendous need.

That’s why this year’s Taste of the Nation is so important. The event, sponsored by Share Our Strength, raises money specifically to end childhood hunger in America. Some of the area’s top restaurants and wine purveyors come together for an evening of great food and drink, as well as awareness of the problem. Those of us who are fortunate enough to have plenty to eat and drink can help those who don’t.

And the fact that this is the 22nd annual event tells you that this is not a new issue; the recent economic woes has made it more dire. Please plan to attend. The event is August 6 at the Orlando World Center Marriott from 6:45 to 10 p.m. Here’s a link to the Share Our Strength website where you can see a list of the participating restaurants.

To kick off the ticket sales, Share Our Strength is offering two pairs of tickets to SJO readers. I will have a drawing Tuesday, July 28, at 3 p.m. for two names. Each winner will get two tickets, each worth $100. To be eligible for the drawing you need only be signed up for my newsletter. If you’re already signed up, you’re already entered — no need to do anything else. If you’re not signed up, it takes only a couple of seconds. Click this link to register and be eligible to win the tickets. (Signing up will also make you eligible for all future drawings, including the almost-weekly restaurant gift certificate giveaways.)

So sign up if you aren’t already. And send the link to your friends to let them know. And if your name isn’t drawn for the free tickets, I’ll have another attractive offer for you. Stay tuned.

We hope you find our reviews and news articles useful and entertaining. It has always been our goal to assist you in making informed decisions when spending your dining dollars. If we’ve helped you in any way, please consider making a contribution to help us continue our journalism. Thank you.
