One of the more intimidating things about dining out is the possibility of mispronouncing certain terms and embarrassing yourself in front of a date or a table of friends or business associates. It goes beyond ordering a glass of “mur-LOTT.” Some will just point to the item on the menu and let the waiter confirm the order: “The charcuterie; of course, sir.” Others will simply order something less linguistically challenging.
Here’s a list from Thrillist of commonly mispronounced words to help you on your dining adventures. I’ll admit to not knowing how to pronounce acai, but I’ll also admit that I’ve never once felt the need to know it. I’ve known the correct pronunciatioin of the Vietnamese beef soup, pho, but everytime I say it correctly in the company of others I get a strange look.
Did the list teach you anything? Are there other words you’re unsure of?
