Southeast Steel Celebrates 75 Years with Anniversary Party
Our friends at Southeast Steel are celebrating their 75th year next weekend with an anniversary event titled “The Art of Cooking, the Love of Food,” with cooking demonstrations, tastings and some pretty nice door prizes, too.
Demonstrations include cooking with a convection steam oven from Wolf and outdoor pizza oven techniques from Alfresco Open Air Culinary Systems. I’ve seen the steam oven in operation and it’s pretty impressive. We’re not talking about one of those tabletop vegetable steamers cum rice cooker. This is something that looks sort of like a microwave oven but does all its cooking with steam. And not just veggies; all sorts of foods, quickly and more healthfully. You have to see it.

Oudom, a Thai and sushi restaurant, is the latest to take over the Graze/Prickly Pear/ Lotus/Mingos space in the Sanctuary condominium building in downtown Orlando. Five restaurants in seven years isn’t too bad, is it?
Maybe Thai will be the magic sauce for this place. Or curry. Or whatever. A restaurant in this location needs to count on frequent vists from neighbors. A menu with a lower price point can help in that regard.
Park Station is the next project from the folks who previously had Diva then NOPA on Morse Boulevard. NOPA was an acronym for Not On Park Avenue, but Park Station is — at 212 N. — but calling it OPA would give the wrong impression. (So would OPAN, which sounds like a Japanese restaurant.)
I wasn’t all that enthusiastic with NOPA, but I had a pleasant lunch experience at Park Station recently.

What a weekend! So much going on. Not the least of which, in my opinion, is the Jack in the Park event Saturday at the Rachel D. Murrah Civic Center, 1050 W. Morse Blvd., Winter Park. I’m delighted to serve as the honorary chair and emcee for the evening. It’s a night of pure fun, all designed to benefit Special Olympics Florida.
A card tournament of 21, or blackjack, is a big focus of the festivities. But there will be so much more, including a silent auction, raffles, entertainment, and, best of all, food from some really terrific restaurants.

 As I reported back in November of 2014, celebrity chef Rick Bayless will open a restaurant at Disney Springs, joining the already opened Morimoto and the currently in progress STK. Bayless’ restaurant will be called Frontera Fresco after his popular Chicago restaurant Frontera Grill, which opened in 1987 and was awarded Outstanding Restaurant in 2007 by the James Beard Foundation.
 Scott GeislerIt hasn’t been written in stone, or, for that matter, on a wooden plaque outside. But the tentative name for the new restaurant that celebrity chef Norman Van Aken is planning for Mount Dora is 1921. That’s the year that the structure the restaurant will occupy was built. A definitive name will be chosen soon.
It’s also starting to look like a reunion of past employees of Van Aken’s Norman’s at the Ritz-Carlton at the Grande Lakes Resort Orlando.
