Ever since it announced, on Monday, that it would close permanently this weekend, Kappy’s Subs, the fifty-seven-year Maitland fixture, has been inundated with crowds of fans wanting one last taste.
The restaurant’s owner, Adam Milsom, made the announcement on social media, saying that they “were unable to get to terms with the party acquiring the location.” The sandwich shop has worked out of a former Whataburger building at 501 N. Orlando Ave since 1967 and has been owned by Milsom’s family since 1972.
Long lines have been forming since the announcement, and the sub shop has run out of food early each day this week. Many of the waiting customers grumbled about the evilness of landlords and their dominance over small businesses. But Kappy’s put out a clarifying post on Tuesday that read: “To the parties purchasing the location, while we were unable to come to terms on a new lease, we acknowledge that we all worked hard in negotiations. We apologize for any unintended consequences from our initial statement.”
So, it’s just business, as Don Corleone might say. The current schedule is to close at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, but the time may move up if the shop runs out of food earlier. Which it probably will.

Tickets are on sale for Monster Mash Orlando 2024, supporting the Restaurant & Allied Partnership of Central Florida (RAPCF). The event is Saturday, Oct. 26, from 6 to 10 p.m., and tickets are $99 per person – $125 at the door, if any are available.
As in years past, Bites & Bubbles, the Mills Park restaurant, will serve as the host venue, with chef Eddie Nickell providing food along with other RAPCF members, including Maxine’s on Shine. The event will also include an open bar, karaoke on the rooftop, tarot card readings, and a costume contest (costumes are not required to attend). Get more information and purchase tickets here. Proceeds from the event go to “the protection, promotion and education of Central Florida member restaurant partners of the RAPCF.”
While you’re in a ticket-buying mood, Cows ’n Cabs has opened its virtual box office for its popular event, which will be on the evening of Saturday, Nov. 9. There are three ticket levels: general admission ($200) with access to the venue beginning at 7 p.m. (it goes until 10:30); VIP ($325), which has a 5:30 p.m. check-in and access to two VIP lounges, plus some other perks; and Ultimate VIP ($650), which also has a 6 p.m. entry, a special elevated VIP area and a specialty bar.
And this year there’s something new – a Thursday night event called BBB, for burgers, beers and bubbles. Tickets for that event, on Nov. 7 from 7 to 10 p.m., are $250 and are limited to only 200 attendees. Tickets here.
Wait, more tickets. Taste of College Park is Oct. 10 from 6 to 9 p.m., and will be at a new location this year: the Great Southern Box Company, the Packing District food hall that also has a good-sized event space. Tickets are $65 to $75. Click click.
