SJO Dining Deals PayBack Offers

Urban Tide Deal ShotHave you been missing all the terrific deals of Visit Orlando’s Magical Dining Month? (Say yes.) Well of course you have. MagDinMo gives you the opportunity to dine in great restaurants at great savings and help to raise money for a great cause. Wouldn’t it be great if you could keep that momentum going? (You: “yes.”)

That’s the mission of the SJO Dining Deals PayBack program. The participating restaurants, all approved by me, of course, have authorized SJO to offer a variety of certificate options with a portion of each sale going to a charity of the restaurant’s choice.

While Magical Dining Month gives $1 for each dinner sold, Scott Joseph Company will contribute $1, $2 or $3 for each certificate purchased depending on the level. And you’re not confined to choosing from a preset menu — choose whatever you like from the restaurant’s full bill of fare.

The setup is different from MagDinMo, but I’m sure you’ll agree you’re getting a good bargain. It’s really a win-win-win situation: You get a good deal, the restaurant gets to welcome guests who appreciate good food, and deserving groups and charities get a donation.

Some of the organizations we’re raising money for include Susan G. Komen Central Florida Race for the Cure; Canine Companions for Independence; Winter Park Day Nursery; and Miracle Makers.

Go to the SJO Dining Deals PayBack page for a list of current participating restaurants. You’ll find among them:

Petrakises to Open Cask & Larder at Orlando International Airport

James and Julie Petrakis, the husband and wife chef team behind the Ravenous Pig, Cask & Larder and Swine & Sons Provisions, will open a version of Cask & Larder at Orlando International Airport next year. The full-service restaurant will be airside in Terminal 2, which houses the gates for Southwest Airlines and is one of the busiest terminals at the airport.

The Petrakises were approached to be part of bidding process to propose a new restaurant for the airport by Johnny Rivers, a well-known and respected former executive chef at Walt Disney World who now operates INGLUR, an international food manufacturing conglomerate in South Orlando. Rivers — often confused with John Rivers of 4 Rivers Smokehouse — currently operates Johnny Rivers’ Grill & Market in the same terminal. Peter Amaro, Jr., president and coo of Master ConcessionAir (MCA) in Miami, is also part of the partnership. MCA operates restaurant and retail concepts in Florida airports, including two retail shops at Orlando International.

Golden Krust

Golden Krust interior

Golden Krust sure doesn’t sound like the name of a Caribbean eatery. Maybe a bread shop or a fictitious business on The Simpsons.

Actually, its origin was as a bakery, in St. Andrew, Jamaica, where the crusts, or Krusts, if you will, that were meant to be golden were the patties and other baked goods that are staples of a Jamaican menu.

Golden Krust also didn’t scream franchise to me as I approached the restaurant in Waterford Lakes, but I figured it out once I was inside.

Baoery to Open in Thornton Park

Baoery logo

The name of the restaurant that will occupy the former Cityfish space in downtown Orlando’s Thornton Park district is Baoery. No, not Bowery, like the neighborhood in south Manhattan, though it’s pronounced the same. Baoery, a play on bao, the the light but doughy bun found on various Asian menus and dim sum carts.
