Hard Rock Hotel at Universal Orlando will cue up an Easter brunch with a touch of rock ‘n’ roll attitude in The Kitchen restaurant from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. The hits will include herb-smoked New York sirloin, leg of lamb, glazed country ham, baked gremoulada salmon, assorted breakfast selections, kid-friendly items, plus desserts. Entertainment will include the Easter bunny and a kids only cookie decorating station.

2015 is quickly approaching and Rocco’s Tacos & Tequila Bar in Orlando, FL plans to welcome the New Year with open arms and most importantly, an open bar. Beard House or Bust: Local Chefs Taking Very Long Shopping Trip

I love this idea.

Another group of chefs from Central Florida is going to New York to cook at the James Beard House. This is getting to be such a regular thing that they should just designate one of the bedrooms in the townhouse for chefs from Greater Orlando. (Either that or give them a James Beard Award. But I digress.) This group of chefs is going to take the long way, driving from Florida to Greenwich Village. And the plan is to gather the ingredients for their Manhattan meal along the route. Maybe some broccoli here, some asparagus there, and perhaps some venison that chooses to cross I-95 at the wrong moment; could be anything.

The chefs include Kevin Fonzo of K restaurant; Hari Pulapaka of Cress; and Bram Fowler of Journeys Catering. Also making the trip will be Jenneffer Pulapaka and Geraldine Fowler to help break up any fights in the back seat. The dinner, appropriately enough, is being called Foraged Along the Way and will take place at the house on 12th Street in New York on June 3.

As you might imagine, cooking at the Beard House, while prestigious, ain’t cheap. There are a lot of costs involved. So to help defray some of the expenses, the chefs are holding a tasting fundraiser at K in College Park. The event is Monday, May 19, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the restaurant’s garden and the dining room as well. The walk-about dinner will feature some of the dishes the chefs plan on serving. Can’t say for sure there will be venison stew. There will, however, be entertainment.

Tickets are $75 plus tax and gratuity. Reservations can be made through K at 407-872-2332. It would be worth it just for the good food from these talented chefs, but you’ll also be supporting them in their efforts to demonstrate the culinary capabilities of Central Florida’s chefs.

If you plan on being in New York on June 3, seats are available for $130 for member of the Beard Foundation and $170 for nonmembers.

Kouzzina by Cat Cora Closing

WDWMagic is reporting that Kouzzina by Cat Cora, the BoardWalk Greek and Mediterranean restaurant, will close at the end of September, almost exactly five years after it opened. Kouzzina took over the space that had originally been Spoodles, another Mediterranean. 

According to a Walt Disney World spokeswoman, the Disney culinears are currently working on coming up with a new concept for the space, but so far nothing has been determined. It will, however, remain a restaurant.

End of September is lead-in to the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival, so it would make sense that they would want to have something in place by then.

Changes in Visit Orlando Magical Dining Month

It’s time for Visit Orlando’s Magical Dining Month, 30 days of good eating at good restaurants for not a lot of money, although it’s more money than last year, but we’ll get to that in moment.

VO’s MagDinMo offers prix fixe, three-course dinners at participating restaurants all over town. The restaurants put together a special menu, usually with two or three options in each category of starters, entrees and desserts. In most cases the menus are reflective of the restaurant’s regular menu, but I’ve noticed in researching some of the participants this year that several are offering items on their Magical menus that aren’t available on their, um, unmagical menus. But that’s OK, you’re still getting a good representation of what the restaurant can do, and it’s still good food for the price.

Now, about that price. For the past several years it has been three courses for $30. This year the price is $33. And that’s the same price whether you’re dining at Ruth’s Chris Steak House or Kobe Japanese Steak House. The higher cost, I’m told, comes at the request of restaurateurs who cite higher food costs. I’m OK with that.

Truffles Grill is Closed

As of today, Ruby Tuesday has closed all of its Truffles Grill locations, including the one in Winter Park Village. Management was informed of the decision Sunday night, and at 10 a.m. today were planning to meet with staff members to inform them that they would receive two weeks’ termination pay. Some staffers will be offered positions at Ruby Tuesday locations.

Truffles Cafe, the original restaurant in Hilton Head, S.C., will remain open. Outside of South Carolina, the restaurants were branded Truffles Grill. Numerous locations were planned for expanding the brand, but only restaurants in Atlanta and here had opened outside the state. According to a manager at Truffles Grill, the company is refocusing its efforts on its main concept, Ruby Tuesday.

It’s unclear if anything else will open in the space at Winter Park Village, which is near the Chamberlin’s market.
