Morimoto Asia Voted Best Restaurant Overall in Foodster Awards
Morimoto dining room 1
Morimoto Asia, the pan Asian restaurant in Disney Springs, was voted Best Restaurant Overall in our Foodster Awards for Independent Restaurants. Victoria & Albert’s at the Grand Floridian was second and Jason and Sue Chin’s Osprey Tavern in Baldwin Park was third.
The Chin’s newest restaurant, Reyes Mezcalaria, was voted best new restaurant. 1921 by Norman Van Aken was second, and Luke’s Kitchen and Bar in Maitland was third.
And the winner of the $100 gift card to Morimoto Asia is John Kuhn. His name was selected by random drawing from among the list of recipients of this e-letter.
Congratulations to all.
New Dates Added for Trip to France with Scott and Kevin Fonzo
France Trip photo
The previously announced dates for our trip to Paris and Lyon are no longer available, but good news: We’ve added new dates in June.
Join me and chef Kevin Fonzo June 23-30 as we sample the best that these two wonderful food cities have to offer. We’ll dine in Michelin-starred restaurants but also stroll the markets and gather ingredients for a cooking class with Fonzo. It’s all curated by Art In Voyage, and it’s going to be great.

Cafe Madrid

Cafe Madrid ext

In my yearend wrap up recently, I noted the many restaurants that closed last year. For good number of them, the distance between their opening date and going out of business was relatively short.

So I’m especially in awe of the restaurants that have shown great longevity. Cafe Madrid, a Cuban/Spanish restaurant on Curry Ford Road, is one. It’s been serving its simple but reliable food for 28 years.

Bocas Grill & Bar

Bocas ext

I clearly ordered poorly at Bocas Grill & Bar, a South American eatery out of South Florida that recently opened a location in South Orlando. (Restaurant Row, actually, but we were on a roll with the southern thing.)

In my defense, the menu is really elaborate, with 12 pages. There are breakfast items, rice dishes, noodles, arepas, tostones, burgers, steaks and seafood. I don’t know what made me choose the Pabellón Criollo Venezolano, but I did.

Field to Feast is Feb. 17

Field to Feast 2018

Tickets are now on sale for the fifth annual Field to Feast event to be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Feb. 17 at Long & Scott Farms in Zellwood.

This is one of my favorite events and I look forward to it all year. So do a lot of other folks — it has sold out the past four years.

There are a lot of things that make it fun. First is the setting, amid the corn fields of Long & Scott Farms (but under a large pavilion roof). It’s a great place to be at sunset.

Epcot International Festival of the Arts Included Culinary Creativity

Epcot International Festival of the Arts 2018 still

The current celebration taking place at Disney’s Festival Park, um, I mean Epcot is the International Festival of the Arts, which runs through Feb. 19.

Of course, Epcot’s festivals always include a food element, and that’s easy to work into this one. Along with the visual arts and performing arts, the Disney culineers are showcasing the culinary arts. This is different from, say, the International Food & Wine Festival because it just is.
