Follow the flog to London

Road trip!

I’m headed to Great Britain and you’re invited to come along via the flog, although I suspect over there it would be spelled flogue. London

I’ll be reporting on food finds and dispelling the myth of British food. We’ll seek out good fish & chips, bangers & mash, and bubble & squeak. I suspect there will be a trip to Drury Lane in search of the Muffin Man for a hot cross bun (or even a hot pleasant bun). And I intend once and for all to unearth the origin of the traditional English breakfast. Just who decided that it should include eggs, bacon, sausage, baked tomato, baked beans and mushrooms? Was it originally intended as a joke?

I’m starting off in London, then heading up to Cambridge and York for a few nights before heading back to London -- two weekends at Borough Market!

If you’re a London regular, I’d love to hear your suggestions. Do you have a favorite pub for a ploughman’s? Know of a gastropub off the track? Or maybe just a place with a good pasty? Send me a note.

See you on the other side of the pond!

Zilli Fish near St. Paul's Cathedral....really cool upscale italian restaurant in ultramodern decor....check it out.... I know this is not typical British food but its some good eatin' after a day of fish and chips and spotted dick.

Thanks! I'll be staying quite near St. Paul's.

Have you been to Rules before? If not, that is a special treat. It's the oldest restaurant in London. http://www.rules.co.uk/

I have been to Rules and I enjoyed it. The locals have largely given it up to the tourists, but that doesn't mean the quality has flagged. Rules has its own gaming preserves from which it draws its pheasants and grouse to serve in the restaurant, and they still observe the tradition of hanging the birds until nearly rotting to draw out the flavor of the meat.

As a "Brit", I would recommend trying a decent tikka masala and a spicy Doner kabab. This isn't haute cuisine, but it would be a true reflection of the hoi polloi, for which I am one. For an excellent Chinese meal, go to any of the small establishments on Little Newport street, behind Leicester Square.

Kushdy, I used to have a favorite take-away Indian called Red Star that was just a few steps away from the Earls Court tube stop, but alas it is no more. I plan on visiting Brick Lane this trip -- the haunts of Jack the Ripper -- where Indian restaurants abound.
jbm  - What's this prejudice against certain foods at bre |2009-07-03 02:44:04
"Just who decided that it should include eggs, bacon, sausage, baked tomato, baked beans and mushrooms? Was it originally intended as a joke?" I don't see a problem here. That looks perfect to me, except it's missing curry sauce. I'd like to know the origin of this odd compulsion to label certain things "breakfast foods" and other things not "breakfast foods." It makes the same sense to me as that rule about not wearing white after Labor Day. Who comes up with these rules, and to what end? Intemperate remark: if you can't eat baked beans at breakfast, you ain't no foodie. ;)

I lived in London for only one year, but was quickly welcomed by the crowd at the Lyceum Pub on the strand: http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/69/694/Lyceum/Strand I agree with the comments on the page posted--it's a lovely pub that's kept its humility among all the tourist-y renovations on the strand.
