Clarence OtisClarence Otis, chairman and chief executive officer of Orlando-based Darden Restaurants, is profiled in the "Corner Office" feature in the business section of today's New York Times. The interview, conducted and condensed by Adam Bryant, focuses on Otis' management style and business theory. If you saw the piece in the Times' hard copy, you missed the whole thing. I think I would be happier if he wasn't both a theater guy AND a lawyer. The one thing I don't like about managerial types is the tendency to make nouns out of verbs and the use of pointless phrases like "going forward" in the place of "in the future." ("Going forward" is pointless because in the usage context, it's impossible to go sideways or backwards.) I'd prefer that e-mail from management use fewer words to say more. So far they don't meet my expectations (upper management, that is). He doesn't seem much different.
